Delta is opening its extreme weather response shelters overnight on Jan. 19, 20 and 21 in response to forecast freezing temperatures. The Homelessness Services Association of BC issued an extreme weather response alert when conditions were expected to feel at or below 0 C. The city is operating two sites: a women-only shelter in North Delta and a mixed site in Ladner that can accommodate couples. Both locations will provide overnight space and light supports during the cold period.
Key details:
- North Delta women-only shelter: Crossroads United Church (7655 Scott Rd.) will operate from 9 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. and offers 10 inclusive spaces for self-identified women aged 19 and over. The entrance is through the north door at the back. The site is wheelchair accessible and pet friendly (pets must be kept in a kennel while inside). There is no cart storage, and the site does not offer showers or onsite laundry.
- South Delta shelter: Ladner United Church (4960 48th Ave.) will operate from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m., has space for up to nine guests aged 19 and over, and can accommodate couples. That site is operated by Options Community Services and funded by BC Housing. Showers and laundry facilities are available there, and pets are allowed on a leash or in a kennel.
- Support and contacts: Guests at both sites will be offered light refreshments and may receive bus tickets and gift cards when they leave. Contact numbers given in the announcement include 604-834-7949 (women-only shelter nights), 604-957-1556 (Azure Place), 604-240-1335 (Ladner nights) and 604-599-8900 (Hyland House). The announcement also referenced 211 and Delta’s online shelter and community resources for more information.
Summary:
The three-night opening provides additional overnight spaces and basic supports during the cold spell, with different amenities at each site. Undetermined at this time.
