Matt Robinson and his friend Allan Kruise created a large snowshoe design on the frozen reservoir at Mill Creek Nature Park during the Riverview Winter Carnival. Robinson is a snowshoe artist and photographer from Nova Scotia who began making larger scale pieces in 2020. Conditions were sunny and cold with little wind, and about 20 cm of snow covered the ice. Riverview Fire and Rescue checked ice safety before the artists worked.
Known details:
- The artwork measured about 50 metres across and took roughly four hours to complete.
- The artists used pre-planning, basic tools and geometry to lay out the design.
- Robinson began the practice during COVID in 2020 and expanded to larger sites after sharing drone photos.
- Allan Kruise filled in for Robinson's usual partner, Sheldon Benoit, this year.
- Town staff said the installation draws visitors who might not otherwise come to the park.
Summary:
The snowshoe artwork was part of the annual Riverview Winter Carnival and attracted people to Mill Creek Nature Park. The town's recreation coordinator arranged for the artists to return, and Robinson said this is the fifth consecutive year they have worked at the carnival. Undetermined at this time.
