Dalkeith's annual two-day winter carnival went ahead over the weekend despite extreme cold. Organizers cancelled the parade because of the low temperatures to avoid frostbite. Indoor events at the community centre continued, and four-on-four hockey games were played. The carnival traditionally includes entertainment, a parade and a pork roast dinner.
Event details:
- The parade was cancelled because of extreme cold, while hockey games and most indoor activities continued.
- Meet the Keepers Wildlife Rescue Centre attended with a lighthearted presentation and animals including a tarantula, a red-tail boa constrictor, an iguana, a ferret, a tortoise, a Giant Flemish rabbit and a mountain coati; the group promotes rehabilitation and public education and was quoted as saying they "work to give animals a voice."
- Live performances included the MacLeod Fiddlers on Saturday afternoon and Ceilidh Drovers for the Saturday evening concert.
- The Sunday pork roast dinner drew more than 150 people, and the Vankleek Hill branch of Scotiabank offered to match funds raised through advance ticket sales for the dinner.
- The carnival is organised by the Dalkeith Recreation Association, led by Jennifer McNaughton, and relies on volunteers and community sponsorship.
- Profits help cover entertainment costs and are invested back into the community; the Association recently funded the emergency replacement of the hockey-rink furnace in December.
Summary:
Organizers said turnout was satisfactory given the frigid temperatures and the carnival generated funds to cover event costs and support local needs. The Recreation Association has already applied funds to replace the rink furnace. Undetermined at this time.
