Since September 2025 the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Engineering has offered a new Master of Engineering (MEng) emphasis in Nuclear Engineering. The course-based MEng can be completed in one year of full-time study and the nuclear emphasis is one of more than a dozen specializations available to students. The emphasis builds on existing offerings such as an undergraduate nuclear engineering certificate and several graduate-level nuclear courses. Two new graduate courses sit at the core of the emphasis and are also available as micro-credentials to other students across the university.
Key details:
- Launch date: the emphasis began enrolling students in September 2025.
- Program type: the MEng is a one-year, course-based professional master’s program with a nuclear emphasis option.
- Eligibility: the emphasis is currently open to students from the Department of Materials Science & Engineering (MSE) and the Department of Civil & Mineral Engineering (CivMin).
- Courses: two new graduate courses, MSE 1074 (Fundamentals I) and MSE 1075 (Fundamentals II), underpin the emphasis and are offered as micro-credentials.
- Participation: more than a dozen MEng students and several students from other faculties completed the first course, and over twenty enrolled in the second.
Summary:
The emphasis aims to prepare graduates for roles related to low-carbon electricity, nuclear medicine, next-generation reactors, and related research and regulatory work. Plans to expand access to other departments have been mentioned by program leaders. Undetermined at this time.
