Family Day falls on Feb. 16 and the North Shore will host a range of community events over the long weekend. The holiday was first observed in British Columbia in 2013. Local recreation centres, museums and mountain resorts are offering low-cost or pay-what-you-can activities for families. Many events are scheduled across North Vancouver and West Vancouver from Feb. 14–16.
Notable events:
- North Vancouver recreation centres are offering workshops and drop-in activities, including a family floral design workshop at Lynn Creek on Feb. 14 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
- Low-cost family classes and activities include $3 family line dancing, Zumba and badminton at Lions Gate, Parkgate and Lynn Creek, plus a $3 family collage workshop at Lions Gate and a $2 parent-participation playtime at Lynn Creek.
- Shipyards family skate runs on Family Day from noon to 4 p.m. with DJs Sage and Emnesia; the City of North Vancouver notes helmets are mandatory for youth 12 and under and skate rentals are limited and priced.
- The Museum of North Vancouver (MONOVA) is offering programming on Feb. 16 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., featuring the exhibit From Routes to Roots, comics and caricature activities, and Squamish Nation culture sharing; admission is pay-what-you-can.
- Grouse Mountain will host family activities, snowshoeing tours (booking recommended), a scavenger hunt and fireworks at 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, and children 12 and under receive free mountain admission and lift tickets.
- Mt Seymour will offer tubing and tobogganing on Family Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Cypress Mountain plans an afternoon of inflatables, face painting, a magician and a mountain-wide scavenger hunt.
