Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council will extend kerb-side food waste collections so every household in the area can recycle food waste. The service is scheduled to begin on 6 April and is part of wider government recycling reforms. The roll-out will add about 100,000 people who do not currently receive collections. The council said the change aims to make recycling more consistent across the borough and to reduce waste sent to landfill.
Key details:
- The new service will cover roughly 70,000 remaining properties in Poole and about 30,000 in Bournemouth.
- Collections will be weekly and take place on the same day as general rubbish collection.
- Internal kitchen caddies, external food waste bins and written instructions will be delivered to each home ahead of the first scheduled collection.
- The council noted that around 30% of household rubbish is food waste and that separating it reduces the amount sent to landfill and associated greenhouse gas emissions.
- Councillor Andy Hadley, cabinet member for sustainability and environment, said the council’s aim is to help everyone recycle more.
Summary:
All households in the BCP area will be able to recycle food waste under the new service, which begins on 6 April. Deliveries of caddies, bins and instructions will take place in the weeks before collections start, and the change is presented as part of government recycling reforms.
