County Durham community champions have been recognised in Karbon Homes' 12 Deeds of Christmas Community Stars for 2025. Seven of the 12 Community Stars named for 2025 were from County Durham after nominations by Karbon Homes residents. Winners received a £100 shopping voucher and a thank you card. The awards form part of the housing association's annual campaign to highlight people who make a positive difference in their neighbourhoods.
Notable local winners:
- Tracey Keers and Karen Jervis received 12 nominations after setting up Imaginable Me CIC in Consett in July 2025; the creative centre offers a supportive space for young people through art, music and other expressive activities, and the pair said they were "overwhelmed and completely blindsided."
- June Barnes of Burnhope was recognised for volunteering with the Little Treasures charity for autistic children and with Inclusive Connections Durham.
- Richard Lee and Jake David were honoured for their work with South Moor Together, an initiative to foster pride, connection and safety in the village.
- Kath Vaulks and Kim Teggery were recognised for activities, home-cooked meals and companionship provided through Durham Alliance for Community Care in Pelton.
- Edmondsley Parish Council in Chester-le-Street was noted for organising community events for children and young people, including seasonal parties and fun days.
- Peer mentors at Stanley Young People's Club were honoured for volunteering, organising activities and supporting fundraising within the club.
