Spotify is rolling out two upgrades to its Messages feature in early 2026. The app now includes a Request to Jam option and an opt-in Listening activity feed for Premium subscribers on iOS and Android. These additions build on features introduced last year, including Listening Stats and the existing Jam experience. Spotify also says it is working on a Groups feature for Messages, but it has not announced a launch date.
Key details:
- Messages now lets Premium users send Jam requests directly inside the app, removing the need for QR codes, invitation links, or nearby-device pop-ups to join a Jam.
- To send a Jam request you open the Messages tab (via your profile image), enter a chat, and tap the Jam button at the top-right; a recipient who accepts can join and become a host.
- Listening activity is an opt-in feature that shows what a user is currently streaming in the Messages tab and side drawer for chats; it is offered to Premium iOS and Android users.
- The Messages view does not display full Listening Stats; it highlights current playback and lets recipients add songs to their library, start playback, and use emoji reactions.
- Listening activity is only shared with people you have already messaged and can be toggled in the Privacy and social settings.
- Spotify has announced a Groups feature for Messages that is under development, with no release date provided.
Summary:
The update brings direct Jam requests and a selective listening feed into Spotify Messages, aiming to make shared listening sessions easier to start and follow. Privacy controls are preserved through an opt-in setting and chat-based sharing. Spotify is also developing group chat functionality for Messages, but timing for that feature remains undetermined at this time.
