Lego introduced Smart Bricks at CES 2026, describing a new interactive element for its bricks. The Smart Brick contains a chip about the size of a single Lego stud and includes sensors and a small speaker. It only activates when paired with Smart Tags or Smart Minifigures, which tell the brick how to respond. For the moment, Smart Bricks are sold bundled inside three Star Wars Smart Play sets.
What is known:
- Smart Bricks can sense motion, position and distance and include an accelerometer, light and sound sensors plus a tiny speaker that produces simple synthesiser-like sounds.
- Smart Bricks operate within a Smart Play ecosystem and respond when near Smart Tags (chips built into set elements) or Smart Minifigures (figures with embedded identifiers).
- Each Smart Brick includes a wireless charging pad; it is reported to last about 45 minutes per charge, takes around a couple of hours to recharge, and powers down automatically when idle.
- The initial products are three Lego Star Wars Smart Play sets available to pre-order, all reported to ship on 1 March.
- Reported set details include: a 473-piece Darth Vader set with one Smart Brick and a TIE Fighter Smart Tag; a 584-piece X-wing set with a Smart-Tagged X-wing, four additional Smart Tag pieces and two Smart Minifigures; and a 962-piece set that includes two Smart Bricks, three Smart Minifigures and multiple Smart Tags.
- Hands-on demonstrations at CES showed the bricks producing sound effects and reacting to actions, such as a duck that quacked, a birthday dinosaur that played “Happy Birthday,” a fighter that registered hits and refuelling sounds, and a bleeping R2-D2.
Summary:
Lego's Smart Bricks add sensing and simple audio to traditional studs, enabling sets to respond when paired with Smart Tags and Smart Minifigures. Early demonstrations highlighted playful, sound-driven interactions across several scenarios. The Smart Bricks are currently available only inside the three Star Wars Smart Play sets that can be pre-ordered and are scheduled to ship on 1 March. Wider availability was not stated in the report.
