A public consultation has opened on plans for a new walking and cycling route on Glasgow's southside. The proposed 1.68-mile (2.7km) route would link the Govan-Partick bridge with Pollok Country Park. The project is the first element of the Connecting Greater Govan active travel scheme. Glasgow City Council has highlighted nearly 1.77 million bridge crossings since the bridge opened in September 2024 as evidence of demand for more walking and cycling routes.
Key details:
- The proposed route runs from Water Row, just south of the bridge, via Govan Road, Orkney Street, Broomloan Road, Edmiston Drive near Ibrox stadium and along Dumbreck Road to its junction with Mosspark Boulevard.
- There will be onward links to Pollok Country Park using a mix of existing and new infrastructure already under way.
- The consultation includes an online survey, drop-in events and an online map, and it closes at the end of March.
- The Govan-Partick bridge opened in September 2024, is 377ft (115m) long, opens to allow large boats to pass and is described as one of the longest opening pedestrian and cycle bridges in Europe.
- Glasgow City Council reported about 1.77 million crossings since opening, and councillors say that usage shows appetite for high-quality walking, wheeling and cycling routes. There was a petition last year to rename the bridge Mary Barbour Bridge, but the council said its naming policy does not allow using the names of people.
Summary:
The proposals aim to provide safer and improved infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists on the southside of Glasgow and build on the popularity of the Govan-Partick bridge. The public consultation is intended to help shape the first phase of the Connecting Greater Govan project and it closes at the end of March.
