Graig Community Council met at Graig Community Hall on January 28 and reported that centre bookings have reached an all-time high. Councillors proposed creating a dedicated working group to manage the centre's operations and finances. The meeting included the chair, Councillor Watts, vice-chair Councillor Cleeve, councillors Sayer, Morris, Tarr, Williams, Grant and Roe, and seven members of the public. Several routine community maintenance and planning items were also discussed.
Meeting highlights:
- Bookings at Graig Community Hall were confirmed as being at an all-time high.
- Councillors unanimously agreed to bring the centre's finances into the main Graig Community Council remit and to move the bank account from Barclays to Unity Trust Bank.
- Councillors Williams, Tarr, Grant, Cleeve and Morris expressed interest in joining the new working group, and Councillor Watts was tasked with initiating a change of signatories on the Barclays account.
- Councillor Appleton said she intends to resign as a councillor while remaining involved in community activities, and the council said her contribution will be missed.
- Approval was given for £550 to address a medium-risk issue with the play area gate mechanism at Bassaleg Bridge and £280 to complete installation of planters by Greenleaf Landscapes; Newport City Council confirmed early February delivery of planters around Bassaleg Bridge.
- The council discussed that Pentrepoeth and Penylan Roads had been removed from the gritting plan after three accidents and will propose a potential new gritting route subject to Newport City Council feedback.
Summary:
The council's steps aim to give the busy community centre clearer oversight by creating a working group and integrating its finances into the main council remit. Councillor Watts will begin the signatory change for the bank account, councillors plan to review budgets and add a project dashboard at the February meeting, and several small maintenance and neighbourhood matters will proceed through the usual council channels.
