Fire departments across Southold Town recorded unusually high emergency call volumes in 2025. Three North Fork departments — Cutchogue, Mattituck and Greenport — each reported their busiest year on record. Cutchogue logged its final call of the year on New Year’s Eve, bringing its total to 567. Neighboring Riverhead Town departments also reported increases in alarms and responses.
Reported call totals:
- Cutchogue Fire Department responded to 567 calls in 2025, surpassing its previous record of 527 set in 2012.
- Mattituck Fire Department announced a record 735 calls in a Jan. 1 Facebook post.
- Greenport Fire Department answered a record 1,221 calls in 2025; Chief Wayne Miller noted limited EMT resources while emphasizing the reward of helping the public.
- Southold Fire Department responded to 845 calls in 2025, up from 787 in 2024.
- Riverhead-area departments also saw higher volumes: Riverhead responded to 1,456 alarms including 11 working fires; Jamesport reported 208 general rescue calls and 141 fire calls; Wading River responded to 1,374 calls (360 fire calls and 1,014 rescue calls), down from 1,522 the prior year.
Summary:
These totals indicate rising demand for emergency services on the North Fork and reflect the ongoing involvement of volunteer firefighters and local departments. Cutchogue is scheduled to open a new firehouse this month, and some departments did not post 2025 totals or did not respond to requests for their numbers.
