The Coweta Police Department and the City of Coweta held a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday to start construction of a new police station. The building will be about 12,800 square feet and is funded by the One for Coweta sales tax initiative. Officials including Police Chief Mike Bell, Mayor Naomi Hogue and Wagoner County District Attorney Jack Thorpe spoke at the event. The new facility will replace the department's roughly 2,500-square-foot building that dates to the late 1930s.
Key details:
- The project is planned as an approximately 12,800-square-foot facility with an estimated cost of $8.4 million.
- Construction is expected to be completed by spring 2027.
- The site is near 111th Street just off Highway 51 on land donated by Tommy Thompson, Inc., with a stipulation that it be used for public safety purposes.
- The design includes a secured vehicle sally port, an expanded dispatch area, patrol briefing space, investigation offices and interview rooms, and evidence intake and processing areas.
- Additional features include a physical training room, a tornado shelter, and an on-site generator.
- BKL and Flintco are serving as project partners on the build.
Summary: The new facility is designed to provide expanded operational space and modern infrastructure to support day-to-day policing and future staffing growth as Coweta continues to grow. Construction began following the ceremonial groundbreaking and is expected to finish by spring 2027. Funding for the project comes from the One for Coweta sales tax and the land was donated with a public-safety use requirement.
