Black History Month is observed each February and traces back 100 years to Dr. Carter G. Woodson's creation of Negro History Week. That week was later expanded to a monthlong observance after a call by President Gerald Ford and the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. This year, institutions and community groups in Greater Cleveland are offering a range of programs that highlight history, arts and education. Events include civic ceremonies, museum programs, library exhibits and community performances.
Events and exhibits:
- Civic and campus observances include the Black Flag Raising Ceremony at Cleveland City Hall on Feb. 7, a Case Western Reserve University Black History Month brunch on Feb. 8, and a CWRU alumni day of service at a local shelter on Feb. 14.
- Literary and archival activity includes Loganberry Books' Douglass Day transcribe-a-thon on Feb. 14, focused on making primary documents from Black history more widely accessible.
- Library exhibits and programs include The Relay Cleveland at the Cleveland Public Library's Main Branch through Feb. 18 and a related closing keynote on Feb. 18 about educational equity.
- Museum and music programs include a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame celebration of Black music on Feb. 21 and free guided Black Art History tours at the Cleveland Museum of Art on Sundays and Wednesdays through Feb. 25.
- Film, theater and performance offerings include the Greater Cleveland Urban Film Festival program on Feb. 21, Karamu House's Ancestral Remembrance Gala on Feb. 22, and a Black History celebration concert with the Euclid Symphony Orchestra on Feb. 28.
- Ongoing historical exhibitions include the Tuskegee Airmen Art Exhibition at the Cleveland History Center, running through April 30.
