Marrowstone Island names Secords 2025 Citizens of the Year

Mark and Linda Secord have been chosen as Marrowstone Island's Citizens of the Year for 2025. The honor is presented annually by the Marrowstone Island Community Association. The award recognizes an individual or couple who have made a lasting difference to the quality of life on Marrowstone or in Jefferson County through volunteerism, activism and leadership. MICA has accepted nominations and collected votes from island residents for the award since 1973.
Contributions:
- Linda Secord served as vice president and president of MICA for three and a half years and organized a full schedule of remote-access Zoom meetings during the COVID pandemic to keep the organization active.
- She serves on the board of the Nordland General Store and helped found the group that restored the store as a community resource.
- Mark Secord has been president of Friends of Fort Flagler State Park for six years and led projects including a new picnic shelter at Mystery Bay State Park, a natural history series, trail improvements and installation of benches.
- Friends of Fort Flagler helped advocate for restoration of Fort Flagler's World War II theater; after advocacy beginning in 2019 and a public/private partnership with state parks, the theater will serve park visitors and the community this March.

The Secords' volunteer leadership has supported local institutions and helped preserve public spaces on and near Marrowstone Island. The restored Fort Flagler theater is scheduled to reopen to visitors this March, and the long-term effect of the Secords' work on island life is noted by the award.
