The annual Tree to Table pancake feed at Grimes Farm Conservation Center is scheduled for March 7 from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. The meal will include three pancakes, two sausage links, a drink and maple syrup sourced from the county's sugar bush at Grammer Grove. This is the first year the county has tapped trees since the August 2020 derecho, and staff placed taps on 13 trees. The event will include a display about maple syrup harvest and a slideshow, with staff available to answer questions.
Event details:
- Tickets cost $6 in advance and $7 at the door; the meal includes three pancakes, two sausage links, locally harvested maple syrup and a drink.
- The syrup is produced from taps placed in the Grammer Grove sugar bush; county staff said the taps have yielded a substantial amount of sap so far.
- County Naturalist Emma Bruck said sugar maple trees were selected because they have higher sugar content than other maple species.
- Information from Iowa State University Extension noted basic tapping guidance, including diameter rules for taps and that sap sugar content varies; at about 2% sugar it can take roughly 43 gallons of sap to make one gallon of syrup.
- Money raised at the pancake feed supports Grammer Grove's sugar bush and park improvements; the park features a playground, shelter house, primitive camping, trails, permitted horseback riding, a glacial erratic and spring wildflowers.
- Grammer Grove is located at 2030 127th Street in Liscomb; related events include a Shed Hunting event on April 11 (registration deadline April 3) and a Brown Bag Bunch Earth Day Wildflower Walk on April 22 (registration deadline April 17), with registration contacts listed by the conservation board.
Summary:
The pancake feed showcases local maple syrup production and helps fund ongoing care and improvements at Grammer Grove. The March 7 event will include educational displays and forthcoming spring programs at the park.
